Merus Rings were originally designed for water treatment. However, Merus oscillations can treat all kinds of liquids, including crude oil. Process improvements in the oil and gas industry are now part of our daily work.
Paraffin provides a good example of our approach. Along with many other components, crude oil contains a certain amount of dissolved paraffin. Crude oil usually comes from great depths, where very high temperatures and pressure keep the paraffin in solution.
As crude oil is brought closer to the surface during extraction, its temperature and pressure fall. The crude can hold less and less paraffin, so the paraffin precipitates. The precipitated paraffin adheres to the pipe walls of the production equipment and settles in the production lines.
Without appropriate measures, pipes, installations and machinery become blocked. Common measures for preventing and resolving these problems range from using chemicals and heating the crude oil to regularly cleaning the pipes mechanically. All these measures are very expensive, and some interfere with crude oil production.
Merus in crude oil production
Merus has conducted research in this area for many years and developed a range of solutions and devices. Merus technology keeps paraffin in solution. Depending on the application, little or no paraffin precipitates. The pipes remain clean and production can continue without interruption. Expensive cleaning procedures are reduced to a minimum.
Oil-water separation, emulsion and wastewater treatment, process optimization and ultimately reducing cleaning and chemical costs are challenging areas for Merus in the oil and gas sector.
Outstanding research results and successful cooperation with major international companies called for a separate organization, so we founded Merus Oil & Gas.
Merus in refineries
Both types of Merus application come together in refineries. Large amounts of water are needed for cooling or heating. This calls for traditional Merus applications, such as treating cooling circuits or heat exchangers, as well as treating the crude oil itself to reduce fouling in various machines and processes.
