Seawater
Seawater.
Seawater contains a wide range of substances that make industrial or technical use difficult.
In addition to natural salt (NaCl), it contains substantial quantities of calcium, algae and many microorganisms that can cause problems in technical applications. Seawater is used near coasts, on ships and on offshore platforms as technical water or to produce utility water. Desalination plants, evaporators or reverse osmosis systems make it suitable for technical or practical use.
Seawater is also very aggressive because of its salt content. Special steels must be used to prevent or slow corrosion. Corrosion is one of the biggest problems in the technical use of seawater.
Most machinery and pipes are still made of ordinary steel, which corrodes heavily in a very short time. Merus has already demonstrated in many applications how successfully these problems can be treated, particularly ordinary corrosion.
Merus Offshore
We work very successfully on drilling and production platforms. Water treatment with the Merus Ring is required at various points, including throughout the platform's water circuit, covering heat exchanger cooling, cooling systems and drinking water production.
Besides preventing limescale, Merus drastically reduces the corrosion rate. In the most demanding applications, Merus reduces corrosion from 10 millimeters per year to +/- 1 millimeter. Such corrosion rates are harmful to any equipment.
A corrosion rate of 10 millimeters per year blocks a pipe in just a few years. Merus extends the service life of all equipment by a factor of five to ten.
