Protecting water pipes

Languages: English, German, French, Spanish

Water pipes are now available in a great many variants. Older buildings and industrial plants mainly have galvanized iron pipes.

In building construction, development progressed through copper pipes and comparatively expensive stainless steel piping to plastic pipes. The latest trend in water pipes is composite materials, in which a metal core is coated with plastic.

The plumbing trade aims to make installation simpler to save time and costs. Composite materials with prefabricated connections are therefore an attractive option.

Today, there are many options for pipework, depending on its use and the available budget.

In residential buildings, there is an increasing effort to avoid metal water pipes to prevent potential damage from corrosion or even pitting corrosion. Smooth surfaces, such as those provided by plastics, are also preferred because they are less susceptible to limescale deposits. Steel pipes are used in industry because these pipes often have to withstand high pressures.

The Merus Ring is suitable for water pipes made of any material

Merus Rings are used on all the types of water pipe mentioned above. Limescale formation and corrosion or rust are the classic areas of application for Merus.

However, limescale deposits can also form in plastic pipes if the water is hard enough. Here we are increasingly encountering so-called microbiological deposits. So-called biofilm or biofouling can occur in all types of water pipe.

These cases appear to occur more frequently in plastic pipes than in metal ones. This may be because metal pipes, such as copper pipes, have a slight inhibitory effect on biofilm formation, since organic material and copper are incompatible. Here you will find examples of pipework in sprinkler systems or pipes in cooling systems.
