Service water in industry

Languages: English, German, French, Spanish

01 /

Service water is also often called utility water or industrial water. It is not drinking water, but water intended for technical use. Service water does not have to meet the strict regulations for drinking water. It can therefore be obtained from rainwater, river water or surface water without elaborate treatment. Depending on its intended use, however, it should meet certain minimum hygiene requirements. Service water is not used as frequently in private households. Two separate piping systems are needed, one for drinking water and one for service water. This involves considerable effort and is not necessarily economical. In homes, service water is used for watering gardens, flushing toilets or cleaning, or in closed systems such as heating.

Service water has been used in industry and agriculture for many years, in production or to irrigate agricultural land. This use has also arisen from necessity, since drinking water is expensive and can become scarce, particularly during dry, hot summers.

Many companies also treat their wastewater, often through very elaborate processes. It is then reused in various applications. This process can be repeated several times, meaning that the water is recycled and reused again and again.

Service water should meet different requirements depending on the application. When used in a cooling circuit, particular care must be taken to prevent excessive algae growth or limescale deposits.

The Merus BIO Ring can combat or greatly reduce algae growth here. If algae growth is not counteracted in time, biofouling problems can develop. Biofouling can then quickly contaminate the entire cooling system and significantly reduce its performance.

Limescale formation in a cooling system also reduces performance. Merus oscillations help keep salts soluble in water, including the salts that form limescale. The calcium therefore remains soluble and does not adhere to the internal walls of the system.

This means that, with the Merus Ring, a cooling system can maintain high performance even at a significantly higher salt concentration in the water.

Corrosion is another problem that must be addressed when using service water in industry. Merus Rings can reduce rust and corrosion to a minimum or even stop them.
