Lotta & Carlotta reduce their ecological footprint

Class 8c of Erzbischöfliche Schule Marienberg in Neuss wins third prize in the “Schools for Future” competition.

This group created a video that was even broadcast on local television. It features Lotta and Carlotta, who set themselves the goal of improving their own ecological footprint. The entry describes how they changed their daily lives to reduce CO2 emissions.

01 /

In short self-interviews, Carlotta and Lotta explain how they intend to proceed and what they expect from their project. In different chapters, they show the changes they have made in everyday life and explain how even small adjustments can affect their ecological footprint.

Each week of the project, the girls focus on a different aspect of their daily lives to analyze what they can do to generate less CO2. In the first week, they took a closer look at food. They also conducted an interview with Urban Gardening, a movement that creates temporary gardens in cities so that local residents learn to appreciate their environment. The second week focused on their personal mobility, concluding that you can also reach your destination by bicycle or on foot. Personal consumption was the theme of the third week. Far too many people buy things that they wear or use only once before throwing them away. The entry shows how things can be done differently. Mirjam Rübbelke-Alo from the Centre for Sustainable Business (ZNU) at Witten/Herdecke University was available for an interview as an expert on the subject. The final week of the project examined how to save energy at home. Small actions, such as switching things off when leaving a room or turning down the heating, are easy to implement. Here, too, they found a knowledgeable interview partner: Dr. Phillip Bendix, a researcher at the Wuppertal Institute for Climate, Environment and Energy.

Our verdict

This entry was produced in a very professional manner. The program was broadcast on NRWision and will certainly have reached a great many people. Schule Marienberg is very well equipped technically and evidently has enough expertise to produce entries like this. Lotta and Carlotta did outstanding work. With entries like this and such a wide reach, they will hopefully help change attitudes towards climate change.
